We begin this discussion talking about bizarre weapon design and fanciful fighting styles, most particularly in SCA armored sport combat. But the subject is larger than that, and has to do with respect and perceived shortcuts when acquiring skills.

In a similar vein to the “diploma mills” and “belt factories” to which the speakers referred, there are Boy Scout troops known as “Eagle rookeries,” in which Scouts are coached, mentored, and in every possible way encouraged to earn the Eagle rank. One friend of mine was a member of such a troop and withdrew because he recognized and disapproved of the practice. No, it wasn’t me. I didn’t stay in the program long enough.
